Fresno State Men’s Basketball Team Investigated for Gambling Activities

Two men’s basketball student-athletes on the Fresno State basketball team have been accused of placing bets on games they had participated in.

According to ESPN sources, junior forward Mykell Robinson has been removed from the team for placing bets on the Bulldog men’s basketball team that they would score lower points and rebounds in matches.

ESPN also reports that Guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins have been suspended from the team, citing possible ties to sports gambling. A source told Action News that Collins had also been suspended for betting on professional sports.

According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) rules, student-athletes, coaches, and athletics staff members are prohibited from betting on games or providing information to anyone who may be involved in or associated with sports betting.

The gambling was discovered by Vance Walberg, head coach, who informed Fresno State’s administration. An internal investigation followed, with the NCAA becoming involved shortly after.

Fresno State has announced that Weaver and Collins will be withheld from competitions while the gambling is being reviewed. Action News sources have also confirmed that Weaver won’t return to the student-athlete program, while Robinson is under investigation and has not been on the team since January 11.

Fresno State has declined to make any further comments at this time.
