Gambling Tax Bills Stall In Wyoming Committee

Wyoming lawmakers adjourned a committee meeting early after disagreeing on a series of gambling taxation bills. The Select Committee on Capital Financing and Investments had been scheduled to review four draft bills, but House-Senate divisions halted progress.

The first bill for a central monitoring system passed the Senate but was blocked by House Freedom Caucus members. A second proposal to increase the sports betting tax from 10% to 20% to give additional funding to addiction programs also failed after industry opposition.

Committee Chairwoman Sen. Tara Nethercott criticized the process, saying, “The failure to pass any meaningful legislation, certainly in the last two years, in any committee, is of paramount concern to people of Wyoming and to myself.”

Two more bills, taxes on skill-based amusement games and historic horse racing wagers, were not considered due to the early adjournment. Any of the proposals could still be introduced individually in the 2026 legislative session.
